Winter Care for Cacti
In Calaveras and Amador Counties, most cacti thrive on a porch or patio where a roof protects them from direct frost. They like bright indirect light and prefer shallow, wide containers. As we approach cooler weather, they need to be prepared for dormancy. Watering is decreased and fertilization stops. Once dormant, they can sometimes go for weeks using only moisture obtained from morning dew and fog. To avoid rot, water in winter only if they begin to appear shriveled.
